Hello Bailly Families!! I hope you all had a wonderful, relaxing winter break. We are getting back into the swing of things at school. Read on to see what your students have been doing this week.

ELA

I was pleased to see that the first graders remembered what anagrams are after such a long break! We spent some time using clues to help us make a new word using the same letters as in the original word that was given to us. Then we made up some of our own anagram puzzles!

MATH

The first grade mathematicians played the One-Loop game. One game contestant secretly chose an attribute card and then placed it face down in the loop.  Another contestant then chose one shape card at a time and asked if it belonged in the loop. If the shape had the secret attribute, then the player would place it in the loop. If the shape did not have the attribute, it would be placed outside of the loop. After doing this a few times students were able to determine and guess the common attribute of all shapes inside the loop. If they were correct, the players would switch roles and keep playing.

ELA

Second graders discussed character traits this week. We talked about what a character trait is and then each student named four traits of one of the characters from The Tale of Despereaux. Students had to use their book and find text evidence to support the traits they assigned to their character. We will continue to work on this a little more next week.

MATH

This week we reviewed what we had learned about shape attributes before break. We discussed the differences between attributes of 2-D and 3-D shapes. We also looked at several 3-D shapes to determine the number of edges, faces, and vertices of each. We will do more with these next week.
Students also took a multiplication test so I could see what level they are at. We will work on multiplication facts when we have free time and I just needed a baseline of what they already know so I know where to start.

ELA

Students continued working on their drawings while listening to the Edmond Fitzgerald. After listening to the song, we continued watching the documentary. Next week students will present their drawings and share what feelings inspired them.

MATH

We took some time to practice long division this week. It's a work in progress, but they are definitely getting the hang of it! We will keep working on division whenever we have free time. They will be masters of dividing in no time!

ELA

Fourth graders continued working on their biography research projects. They are currently finishing up the timelines. I can't wait to share the finished products with you soon!

MATH

Fourth grade math students worked on more algebra problems this week. We practiced setting up the problem. They have been doing great at the solving part, but seemed to be struggling to remember how to set them up. We also worked a a few long division problems using multiple digit divisors.

Stay warm and safe!
