LANGUAGE ARTS

This week we wrote complete sentences to summarize the beginning, middle, and end of the E-Mergency book we read last week. Next, we rewrote each sentence eliminating all words with a certain letter and replacing them with different words. For example, in the beginning summary sentence we chose the letter A. So when we rewrote the sentence we had to replace every word that contained the letter A with a word that did not. It gets hard thinking of word replacements that don't contain such a commonly used letter, but they did it!



On Tuesday, students deciphered yet another secret message! The message read: Numbers can stand for sounds in words! We then read the book Wumbers. It is a fun book that combines words and numbers. Students took turns reading pages aloud. They did a great job deciphering the "wumbers"!

MATH

We continued our lesson on area this week. We received a fax from Imi and Zani asking for our help. They have a game called Pom Pom Toss and need to know how to tell how big the targets are. I explained to them that to do they we need to measure the area of each target. We discussed that are is the measurement of a flat surface.  It has to be measured in square units ensuring that the entire surface is covered with no gaps or overlaps. Students looked at different targets and predicted which was larger. Next, they used 1 inch squares to measure and compare the areas. They learned that many targets had the same area but different shapes. Students then created their own targets using 8 or less square inches. Then, students arranged the targets in what they predicted was smallest to largest. Next, they used squares to measure and confirm that the shapes were correctly arranged. Students then received another message from Zani asking if he had measured a target correctly. Students wrote back telling Zani what he had done wrong and how to correct it.

LANGUAGE ARTS

Students finished up their reading analyzers for chapters 5 and 6 of My Father's Dragon. Next, students began working on another prediction paragraph for how the book will end. Now that we are half way through the book they know the characters, setting, and much of the plot. They should be able to predict an ending that makes sense with the plot. They began planning their paragraphs using the hamburger model. We will work next week on writing out the paragraph focusing on word choice, sentence structure, and punctuation. 

MATH

Students worked with a partner this week to build a 3-D shape out of pipe cleaners and straws. They worked together to figure out the difficulties they came across. We will use these shapes next week to make bubbles with 3-D shapes in the middle. Students will predict what shape will be in the middle before we dip them in the bubble solution. We watched a short video demonstrating how this will work. Students are very excited for this experiment!

                                          

LANGUAGE ARTS

This week students scooted around the room reading excerpts from Jane Goodall's autobiography. They completed a chart about each excerpt. They wrote complete sentences for each excerpt explaining who the interaction occurred between, how it affected them, if it was purposeful or accidental,  and whether it was fleeting or deep and long lasting. 

MATH

We discussed all of the patterns that the students had discovered when they filled in their mini 100's charts. Next, each student picked their own number below 20 and colored in a chart and attempted to find a pattern that the multiples followed. Next week we will begin a new lesson. 

LANGUAGE ARTS

This week we did a grammar lesson on pronouns. We covered the different rules and forms of pronouns. I printed out a packet of pronoun worksheets that they completed and then we went over them together. Next week, I will introduce them to the genre of mystery and vocabulary that is associated with it. This will lead us in to our novel that we will work on for the remainder of the year. 

MATH

This week we discussed three types of transformations: reflection, translation, and rotation. The first day we focused on reflection. Students completed a worksheet and we then discussed their work. The next day, we discussed translation. After our discussion, students gave instructions to each and they had to find the location of a shape on a grid by following those directions.

Today we will kick off

our OSOB book choice for the

year. Students will come home

with a book and a reading schedule.

LANGUAGE ARTS

This week we learned about lipograms. Students used the words they came up with on their homework assignments to replace every word that contains the letter E in  the poem Jack and Jill. Students also used a cipher to decode a message telling them that E is the most used letter in our written language.


After, students had a full understanding of what a lipogram is, we read the book E-Mergency. In this book, the letter E gets injured and cannot be used while it heals so the remainder of the story replaced the letter E with the letter O. 

MATH

Prior to winter break students took a Chapter Check-up to test their understanding of the material we have covered so far. Since all students did well and seem to have a solid grasp on everything, we began a new lesson this week. 

Our new lesson introduced the concept of area. We discussed that area is defined as the space that is occupied by a flat shape or the surface of an object. Students also learned that area is measured in square units. Students were presented with a rectangle and square and  had to predict which had a larger area. They then were given 3x3 squares to cover each shape and learned that both shapes had the same area. We will work on area more next week. 

LANGUAGE ARTS

Before break, the students presented the skits and summaries they created covering the main ideas of chapters two and three in My Father's Dragon. They seemed to have a lot of fun doing that! I have attached the videos for your viewing pleasure!

Students were also introduced to a reading analyzer prior to winter break. The reading analyzer is another structure to use to help them understand what they are reading. With the analyzer, students have to state the title, genre of writing, any new or key words, character feelings, important passages, and the main idea. Since this was their first time filling this out we completed it step-by-step together after we read chapter four. 
This week we read chapters 5 and 6 aloud together and then students were paired up to work on a reading analyzer. One group did chapter 5 and the other group did chapter 6. We will discuss these next week to ensure that they were able to complete the analyzer and thoroughly understand how to use that tool. 

MATH

We began learning about 2-D and 3-D shapes this week. I was impressed by how many shapes they were able to name in each category. Students then constructed 2-D shapes using pipe cleaners and straws. We will learn more about the attributes of these shapes next week.  

                                       

LANGUAGE ARTS

Students completed a vocabulary map this week on the word naturalist. We discussed the meaning and students were introduced to activist and naturalist Jane Goodall. We began reading excerpts from her autobiography, My Life With Chimpanzees. We will be completing a chart covering the interactions that take place in several excerpts from this book. 

                                   

MATH

Students began working on 100's charts this week. They were asked to fill in the multiples of 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and 10 on individual charts. I encouraged them to look for patterns as they were filling out each chart. We will discuss the different patterns next week. 

LANGUAGE ARTS

This week students finished up their biography outlines on Ruby Bridges. They also learned the 10 rules of the order of adjectives. We practiced the rules on several sentences that contained multiple adjectives. 

MATH

This week students took a Chapter Check-up to monitor their progress on the lessons we covered in the last chapter. We also reviewed cross sections of polyhedrons. We will begin a new lesson next week.
