ELA
The first grade code crackers continued working with the Caesar cipher wheel. They have now mastered the art of deciphering and enciphering! Next, we moved on to the telephone keypad cipher. This was much easier for them to decipher than the Caesar wheel!
I gave them a heads up that next week they will be learning to speak a secret language. They are super excited!
MATH
In math, we have been working on making shapes that will be used for a game. We folded squares into rectangles and triangles. This shows students how one shape can become another. We then went a step further and cut the created shapes in half to make yet another different shape. We will be using all of the created shapes to play a fun math game next week.
ELA
The second graders have been loving Despereaux so far! They all seemed to be hooked on the story already! We have read some chapters together in class and others have been assigned to be read at home. By Monday, students should have read chapters 14 and 15 at home. Please encourage your child to complete their reading so we can have meaningful conversations in class. Thank you for your support as we embark on their first novel study!
MATH
The second grade mathematicians have been busy making new shapes out of triangles. They have used triangles to create new polygons such as squares and parallelograms. They then determined if their newly created shapes had lines of symmetry and how many.
After wrapping up that unit, we moved on to discussing transformations and tessellations. Students learned three moves of transformations: translation (slide), reflection (flip), and rotation (turn). We will be using these moves to create tessellations in the upcoming weeks.
ELA
My third grade friends worked together to finish up the retelling story map of Why the Raven's Feathers are Black. We then went over it together to make sure they understood the important elements of the myth.
Next, we began creating a Folklore chart. We will continue to fill it in with different types of folklore and characteristics of each. Students then completed a noun search using one of the myths that we had read previously.
MATH
Third graders have been learning about finding an algebraic function. It is all about finding the relationship between two items to find a general rule to apply. We are still working on mastering this skill and will continue working on it next week.
ELA
Fourth graders have been working on turning their interview answers into a multi-paragraph composition. After writing a sloppy copy and doing some editing and revision, they turned the final copy into a Google doc. I will be printing out their final drafts and sending a copy home soon!
Next, they worked on Latin and Greek prefixes and suffixes. They learned about how language has changed over time. We will continue with this next week.
MATH
Your fourth graders may have come home wanting to show you a magic trick! They were amazed that I was able to guess the sum of the five cards they had picked! Of course I wasn't actually using magic:) We spent some time discussing the how the "trick" was actually done. Next week they will be creating their own tricks to test on their classmates.
