ELA/LANGUAGE ARTS

Students returned the picture badges that represent connections that are special to them. On Monday, students assembled their badges onto the shields and decorated them. As a class, we went over the rubric they would be graded on when they presented their shields and connection badges. Tuesday each student had an opportunity to share their “Shield of Connections” with their classmates. It was amazing to see what great connections they came up with! I am going to hang the shields in the classroom for others to enjoy and I will send them home in a few weeks. Please enjoy the pictures below of the presentations.

ELA/LANGUAGE ARTS

This week students were introduced to the poem Eldorado
by Edgar Allen Poe. This is a very complex poem to understand, especially for students at the second grade level. Students were introduced to a reading analyzer to assist with comprehension of the poem. We did this together as a class on the whiteboard. The reading analyzer breaks down what we are reading into smaller parts to help make them easier to understand. After we completed the analyzer and talked about it, I reread
Eldorado to them. It was easier for them to grasp the meaning the second time around!

In third grade, students read a variety of six available myths and chose their two favorite myths from the selection provided. Next, we read Raven Steals the Sun, Stars, and Moon as a class. After reading, we completed a retelling story map together. The retelling map helps to break down the myth into steps that make it easier to understand. Students will work in pairs next week to complete a retelling story map on one of the favorite myths they chose.

We reviewed some grammar rules this week. We talked about the different types of verbs. Their favorite parting was practicing parts of speech using Mad Libs! They had a blast retelling the hilarious stories that they made using prompted parts of speech. Ask them to share with you:)
