FRIDAY……… FRIDAY
1ST GRADE LA
Coat of Connections: Continued and
FINISHED!!!! All the kids did amazing!!
Their ability to comfortably stand in front of the class to show their
patches and read their connections was fantastic!! The differences in their patches
and connections were a great teaching tool as well. We had a couple students
use a tree as their patch, yet one represented Christmas and the other
represented nature. What a great opportunity to share that sometimes a picture
can have more than one connection!
1ST GRADE MA
Measuring a box: Trust me, it’s a little
more entertaining than that. Our math series has two characters, Imi and Zani,
who we “correspond” with via fax and email before and after each lesson. Imi
and Zani needed us to help them measure a box filled with math supplies so they
could find out how much it would cost to ship it. The box was filled with
different types of measuring tools, such as: ruler, string, paper clips,
measuring tape, 1 inch squares, even a measuring cup. The students were broke
up into groups to think of ways to measure the ATTRIBUTES (ask your child to give you the definition of this) of
the box along with what tools they needed for the job. The students did a great
job and came up with some outstanding ways to measure the boxes attributes!!
2ND GRADE LA
ElDorado: Poetry analysis is 2nd
grade??? Yep, they did it, and they did amazing at it! This week we read the
poem ElDorado and took it apart with a ‘Reading Analyzer’. This helped us
better understand what we were reading. The worksheet broke the poem into key
words, feelings, description/images, ideas, structure. Doing this together as a
class helps the students see the poem in a way they may not have considered. There
were some great connections made!!!
2ND GRADE MA
Measuring with inch and half inch: Right
now we are mastering the art of ACCURACY,
“measure twice cut once” kind of lessons. We are working on measuring to the
nearest inch and half inch. We did a little exercise to help the students
understand the difference in measuring the same object with different units. We
took my shoe and a student’s shoe to measure a table; we noticed it took less
of my shoe and more of the smaller one to cover the length of the table. This
is the same concept of measuring an item with both inches and half inches; it
will take more half inches then inches to measure an object.
We are still having a little trouble when we
asked to measure to the NEAREST unit. If you have the opportunity at home to
measure items with your child, or even draw lines on a paper and have they
measure to the nearest inch or half inch that, would be very helpful!
3RD GRADE LA
Myth and Legend: Myth reading and
retelling!! This week, the students were
all given 1 of 3 myths to read individually. Once the students finished their
reading they were grouped with the other students who read the same myth. Next,
they worked together on a retelling worksheet. The retelling worksheet helps
the students break down the myth for better understanding. In our next class we
will retell each myth to the class.
3RD GRADE MA
Measuring in Centimeters: This week we
started measuring OURSELVES!! We have taken calculator tape to estimate
different lengths of ourselves, height, foot size, wrist….. Next, we will be
using measuring tape to make accurate
measurements and calculating the difference. The goal of this is to improve our
measurement benchmark, the length of
a familiar object that will help you estimate other lengths more easily. This 3rd
grade class loves any kind of learning that gets them out of their seats!! They
are an active bunch that always keeps me entertained!
4TH GRADE LA
Greek and Latin: Computer time!!! This week has been a fun and easy week for
the fourth graders. The students have spent the past two days on the Fact
Monster website looking up Latin and Greek work elements. This exercise will
help the students decode vocabulary in the English language.
4TH GRADE MA
Shapes: Parallelograms, rectangles,
polygons, and more……. This unit is a little tricky!
We are working on defining and looking at
examples and non-examples for these shapes. Where it gets a little difficult
for a few to understand, some of these shapes can have more than one name. Example,
a quadrilateral is also a polygon. My plan for this unit is to go slow and
steady. I want to make sure we all have a firm foundation before we move on.
