LANGUAGE ARTS

This week students learned the hamburger song about writing a persuasive paragraph. We began working on our hamburger model to write our paragraphs on whether or not all First graders should learn Pig Latin. Click the video below to hear them sing!

Next week, we will work together on structuring and writing our paragraphs based on what students have put in their hamburger models.

MATH

In math this week we finished up our Measurement Fair. We discussed the different results that our mathematicians got while at the different centers. We also learned how to be a good math writer and why it is so important to be able to explain how you got your answer.

                                    

LANGUAGE ARTS

Students have been working on finishing up their opinion paragraphs this week. Due to elearning on Tuesday, we only met once this week so we will take some time to complete those on Monday before moving on. 

MATH

Students continued learning about triangles this week. We went over the attributes of obtuse, right, and acute triangles. On Thursday, they were introduced to a protractor. The kids kids used these to measure the angles in different triangles. We will work on this a little more next week as using a protractor proved to be a little tricky for students!

                                        

LANGUAGE ARTS

Students began composing their final drafts for The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses paragraph. It's interesting to see how students interpret the same character very differently. Some thought the girl was gifted and kind, while others thought she was selfish and disobedient. Every student did have to cite examples from the text that supported their interpretation of the girl. Since we were only able to meet one day this week due to elearning, we will finish these up on Monday.

MATH

In math this week, we continued working on using an algebraic formula to solve problems. This is a difficult concept for many to grasp. Students were presented with problems using different shapes and configurations than we used last week. We will continue working on this until everyone has a strong understanding of how to find and apply formulas to different problems. 

LANGUAGE ARTS

Students continued working on their Greek/Latin word part packets. They even made up a few words of their own using the different prefixes, suffixes, and root words. Due to only meeting once this week, we will finish this up together on Monday before starting a new lesson.

MATH

Students had some friendly competition this week playing Triple Play. The game requires kids to make sets of three shapes that can all be classified in a single group, such as regular polygons or squares. They had one minute to make as many groups as they could from the cards they were dealt. It was a little tricky at first but they caught on quick and did great!

LANGUAGE ARTS

This week we translated our connections from home from Pig Latin to English. Each student presented their connection in Pig Latin and friends decoded what they were saying. The kids did very well with this! Next, we had the discussion of whether or not every first grader should learn Pig Latin. The students opinion was split down the middle. We started discussing paragraph structure and will begin working on persuasive paragraphs next week based on an opinion about learning Pig Latin.

MATH

We had our Measurement Fair this week! The student mathematicians were very excited about this! There were several centers set up with four baggies containing different items. At each station, students picked two bags, made a prediction about the weight of the two items, weighed the items using our hanger scales, and then drew a picture and wrote sentences about the outcome. 

LANGUAGE ARTS

Students worked on editing their persuasive paragraphs this week. We looked up synonyms for words in their paragraphs and talked about how using interesting words makes paragraphs more desirable to read. We also brainstormed similes and discussed how using them adds depth to paragraphs as well. We will continue working on these and write our final drafts next week.

MATH

The mathematicians worked with triangles this week. They started with 3x3 squares that they cut into triangles along the four lines of symmetry. Next, students used those triangles with a partner to make different patterns on a color blocked square. The partners then designed their own patterns using the triangles on blank squares. We continued using triangles on Thursday, but this time used the triangles to make new shapes, such as squares and rectangles. 

LANGUAGE ARTS

This week the each student picked one character trait they felt represented the girl from The Girl who Loved Wild Horses. Next, they wrote a paragraph entailing which character trait they had picked. The writers used the hamburger model to structure their paragraphs. Then, they partnered up with a friend to do peer editing on their paragraphs. We will work on finishing these up next week. 

MATH

Our third grade mathematicians were presented with an algebraic problem to solve. We are trying to implement using a formula rather than making drawings and counting. We are still working on this concept and will continue until everyone fully grasps it.

                            

LANGUAGE ARTS

This week started learning about Greek and Latin root words, prefixes and suffixes. Students worked with partners to find the meanings in Greek and Latin and how they were implemented into the English language. Next week students will make up there own words using the Greek/Latin word parts. 

                                        

MATH

In math this week, we went over several worksheets together to ensure that everyone understands the properties of all of the shapes we have been learning about. Next week, we will play a game called Triple Play to test their knowledge on the shape attributes.
