News for the week of February 29, 2016

Bailly Elementary!

We had a fun week filled with crazy shoes & socks, wearing yellow, pink and green! I am proud of all my kids who survived the cogAT and iStep testing! Each kid was still able to come down to my class after testing and keep working hard, great job Bailly Learners!

Congrats to the kids who brought in the answer to this weeks riddle: raibnow!

IMPORTANT: Next week if they would like to receive a prize from the bucket, they must bring in the answer written on paper from home! We've had a few sneaky kiddos sharing the riddle and answer right before class!

Next weeks riddle:

What word becomes a palindrome when viewed upside down and backwards?

CogAT Testing for High Ability

This week I gave the screening test to all 2nd grade students for High Ability Services for the 2016-2017 school year. Starting next week, I will be giving the full test  (1 hour on Tues, Thurs. & Fri.) to those who qualified and those who are already in the HA program. I should not miss any of my HA classes next week!

IMPORTANT REMINDER:

Mrs. Jarka and Holly Koedyker from LES are attending a workshop on High Ability Identification in April, along with a representatives from each building in Duneland. (LIS, WIS, CMS and CHS) They look to gain a lot more valuable information for narrowing in our high ability identification.  Students will now be monitored at the end of each school year which is new.  Next year there will be new students added, many will remain and some will be removed.  It's pretty common, at this age, to have the flow "in and out" of a gifted program.  I'm excited about the continuing progress of our high ability services.  Not only is Duneland's High Ability identification becoming more spot on, but the new curriculum is geared towards meeting the needs of gifted children.  We've also just purchased a new math curriculum that we'll be using at each grade level next year.  I'm so very excited about the future of our program!

First Grade Math:

We missed class on Wednesday because I was testing. On Thursday we finished our clock/time packets and I sent them home. A few of them had a few more problems to do that they can finish at home if they'd like. Next week we will begin a new topic!

First Grade LA:

This week Emmersynn finished up the Linking Letters lesson . She read the book Max's Words wand we did the reading analyzer together. We also put together her word cloud but had a computer glitch so I'm hoping to send that home on Monday!
I sent home a homework worksheet, she needs to write down things that rhyme with hair!

Second Grade Math:
This week we started the magic hexagon packet. The kids are enjoying playing with this game as it's similar to Sudoku where each horizontal or diagonal like adds up to 38 and each number can only be used once. We will finish up these packets next week!

Second Grade LA:

This week we read an excerpt from The Testing Tree talked about metaphors. We looked up some metaphors and then thought up some of our own and wrote them down in our journals. They came up with some really great metaphors and took turns sharing them with the class. Next week we will begin a mini book club!

Third Grade Math:

We missed again this week because of testing! I can't wait to see you all next week!

Third Grade LA:

This week we read the book East O' the Sun and West O' the Moon aloud in class. Rowyn did a great job reading it on Monday and Natalie on Tuesday. We talked about the fairy tale and did a reading analyzer together. Next week we will read the book The Fisherman and his Wife.

Fourth Grade Math:

This week we worked on our math role reversal presentations. Please see the presentation list below. The kids were a little worn out from iStep testing so we worked in a little fun on iPods too!

Fourth Grade LA

We finished up our presentations!  On Monday David did his presentation about Thomas Edison and Olivia did her presentation on George Lucas. On Tuesday Ira gave her presentation on Harry Houdini. I'm really proud of these kids, they've worked very hard on each step of the project for weeks! Their hard work really showed! Next week we'll begin a whole new project!
