News for the week of February 1, 2016

We're loving February!

Congrats to the kids who brought in the answer to last weeks riddle: a clock! All my kiddos who brought in the correct answer got a special treat!

I wanted to gather how many parents are getting the information on my blog, I'll be sending home a letter this week to verify I have everyone's correct email address!

This weeks riddle:
What is the longest word in the dictionary?

  • The Life Skill of the Week was on Responsibility.
  • The Word of the Week was Etiquette
  • The Quote of the Week was "If it is to be, it is up to me!"

Kindergarten CogAT Testing for HA
This week begins the month of February which means I'll be screening all kindergarten students for High Ability Services for the 2016-2017 school year Tuesday & Wednesday this week (2/8, 2/9). It looks like the grade most affected by testing will be my first graders.  We get the best results when we test in the morning and that happens to be when I see my first grade groups. Come March it will be screening all of second grade for High Ability Services for the 2016-2017 school year, so flexible scheduling will continue . . .

First Grade Math:

This week we learned about clocks and time! I love this group of girls, we like to "shake... shake it off" to Taylor Swift while we work on our math packets! (who knew your pencil could double as a microphone?!) They really liked learning how to tell time on a clock down to the minute, they are quick learners! We will continue with a time lesson next week!

First Grade LA:

This week Emmersynn and I worked on Rebus Picture Puzzles. She solved all her puzzles and couldn't wait to take them home to teach her little sister too! She read the book called The Fantastic 5 & 10 Cent Store and we discussed how she had an uncle that owned one many years ago! Next week we will learn about hieroglyphics!

Second Grade Math:
We worked on a packet called "Patterns in Multiplication".  It's showing them the trick to multiplying any number by 10, 100, or 1,000.  They see the pattern of just writing the number then adding that number of zeros to the end.  Where they are mixing up is when they put the commas in.  We went over how they need to count every three from the far right of the number which causes the original commas to change.  We were getting pretty spread out among the packets, so I sent home the multiplication ones and next week we will move onto Pascal's Triangles.

Second Grade LA:

They gathered around in a circle and took turns reading Edward Tulane. Logan, Layla and Keith took turns reading chapters 14, 15 and Bailey and Zach read chapters 15 and 16 the next day. We wrote in our journals about the book (trying to use PQA). They love writing me all kinds of fun questions in there, I really love getting to know all of their personalities! Next week we will continue reading and writing in our journals!

Third Grade Math:

We started off by taking another Multiplication Sweet timed test.  This group is so determined and work very hard to improve each week.  I asked them to take a sheet home to practice if they did not pass! They formed different groups to solve their latest packet about multiplication which included lots of story problems, they all work so well together!
Next week we will start a new packet about logic!

Congrats to our first sweet winner of multiplication! Sam M!

Third Grade LA:

This week they finished up the Edmund Fitzgerald pictures (look for all the pictures attached below in case the video doesn't work for you). They are hung in the hallway and are getting lots of compliments! The kids wrote in their journals their opinion if the Edmund Fitzgerald should be considered a legend. We also got to work on an extreme dot-to-dot of the ship too!

Happy 9th Birthday Amadeo! We all sang to Amadeo and he got a special visit from Mr. Zeck during class wishing him a happy birthday too!

Fourth Grade Math:

This week they were greeted with a new packet about persuasive writing in math, and at first that didn't go over well at all! They read 3 articles and wrote out a hamburger page about why fractions are important. Once they finished it, we all talked about and and decided it was actually a fun project to do! Our second day we worked on Sumdog in class, that was a lot of fun!

Fourth Grade LA

They are still hard to work on the bio projects!  I'm very proud at how hard they are working on these.  I hung their timelines and all the children are enjoying reading them.  They have signed up for presentation dates. Please encourage your child to practice at home and dress the part!
